DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO HIV RECENTLY?

If there is a chance for it, there is PEP – post-exposure prophylaxis or protective antivirus treatment that can prevent infection – available to you.

WHAT IS PEP?

PEP is a treatment based on combination of antivirus medicinal products that can prevent infection with the virus. Treatment has to be introduced as soon as possible after the potential exposure to the virus, preferably within 2 to 4 hours, but no later than 72 hours after the exposure. The longer you wait the smaller the possibility for the treatment to be successful. Protective treatment takes 4 weeks.

WHEN CAN I RECEIVE PEP?

Decision on induction of treatment is made by a specialist infectologist on the basis of expert criteria, primarily based on risk evaluation of virus transmission. PEP is prescribed after a high risk HIV exposure event occurred, principally after an unprotected receptive anal intercourse and after semen ejaculation into mouth or eye in case it is known that partner is HIV positive or demonstrates high risk sexual behaviour.

WHERE CAN I RECEIVE PEP?

In Slovenia PEP is obtainable exclusively at the Department of Infectious Diseases of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, however, you will need an urgent referral for medical examination which you can get at the nearest emergency room or from your personal physician.

HOW CAN I GET PEP?

In case of unprotected sexual intercourse or semen ejaculation into mouth or eye you can call our hot-line and our trained counsellors will give you all the necessary information regarding PEP and will also, if needed, organise an emergency treatment with an infectologist at the Department of Infectious Diseases*.

IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO HIV AND WISH TO RECEIVE PEP, PLEASE CALL US AT +386 30 361 280. COUNSELLOR IS AVAILABLE 24/7, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO ACT QUICKLY! YOU ONLY HAVE 72 HOURS AFTER THE EXPOSURE, BUT THE SOONER YOU RECEIVE THE TREATMENT THE BETTER THE POSSIBILITY OF ITS SUCCESS.

*You can get PEP also without calling us on the hot-line. In such case you simply need to get a referral and go to the Department of Infectious diseases of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, find there their emergency room and explain what happened.
